As the leaves start to change and the air cools, our thoughts turn toward pumpkins, apple cider, donuts and fall festivals. Northern Virginia is beautiful year-round, but I really love it in the fall! The vibrant colors of the leaves, the crisp smell of the air and houses decorated for the season, bring on a welcoming feeling throughout neighborhoods. Grab a mug of mulled cider and read more about some fun fall festivals in the area.

Fall for Fairfax KidsFest

This family festival is in its 25th year of offering fun, educational programs, activities and entertainment for families with preschool and elementary aged children. The Fall for Fairfax KidsFest will be held on September 30th and October 1st. Activities for the event include the KidWay MidWay, with many rides and attractions, food vendors, pony rides, model trains, a petting zoo, pumpkin painting, scarecrow making; as well as recycling and public safety-themed exhibits. Two stages will provide plenty of free entertainment throughout.

Fairfax Fall Festival

The City of Fairfax will host the 41st annual Fall Festival on October 14th. Visit historic downtown Fairfax for arts, crafts, gourmet food vendors and children’s activities, such as “Touch a Truck.” This is a chance for kids to visit all types of trucks, up close and personal. Plus, there’ll be lots of amusement rides. Three stages throughout the festival will host music and entertainment. The City of Fairfax Museum & Visitor Center, Ratcliffe-Allison House and the Civil War Interpretive Center, will each hold open houses during the event. This festival is sure to be fun for the whole family!

Fall Harvest Family Days

Visit George Washington’s Mount Vernon on October 21st and 22nd to enjoy fall the old-fashioned way. Make corn husk dolls, walk through a straw bale maze, take a horse-drawn wagon ride and play early-American games. You can watch 18th-century dancing, listen to music from that time, and see wheat-treading and blacksmithing demonstrations. Rain or shine, this event is sure to take you back to a simpler, yet intriguing time!

Lee-Fendall House Halloween Pumpkin Hunt

Costumes are encouraged as you search the garden for your toy-filled pumpkin at the 4th annual Halloween Pumpkin Hunt on October 28th! Every child of elementary school age, or younger will receive a pumpkin. Adults and older children may enjoy the other activities at the event as well: spooky stories, take home crafts, temporary tattoos, refreshments, and costume parade with prizes and a sticker station.
